What our clients think
We’ve worked with SPACE strategies on a number of projects, including some excellent work they undertook for SFT on office accommodation. Building on these positive experiences – and as a joint commission with BDP – SPACE strategies have also assisted us with developing a new engagement and briefing process for the development of a new community hub project which will include a secondary school, library, local office as well as accommodation for national and local partner agencies. Their unbounded enthusiasm and commitment to delivering positive outcomes was driven through the entire engagement process and provided participants with a real willingness to innovate and do things differently.
SPACE strategies supported the council by continuously challenging traditional concepts of the workplace and, by providing alternative design solutions, creating opportunities for new ways of working. They really understood how space could underpin our change culture & delivery of flexible working and how making it a reality will gain efficiencies and organisational & customer benefits. The team had an approach which suited us - the workshops & conversations were professional & competent but relaxed enough to allow for debate & allowed space for us to ‘get it’. The pace was also maintained as we had tight time scales for delivery of the project scope & outcomes. The Council’s current office rationalisation project, which involves offices in 5 settlements & 1600 staff, has been developed in partnership with SPACE strategies utilising their innovative “kit of parts” concept.
Working with SPACE strategies to create a detailed design brief proved to be an excellent use of time within the project programme. It allowed a continued engagement with users, maintaining momentum during the 6 months procurement of the design team. The output itself provided an excellent, well-researched and tested space budget, allowing the Design Team to avoid getting involved in the nitty gritty of space negotiations and to start designing from day one.
“Space strategies have been engaged by & collaborated with Angus Council to deliver a number of major change projects which have realised significant benefits for the organisation, including improved outcomes & savings over the past 5 years. These commissions have all involved maximising the value from investments through expert space planning advice & using creative design to meet user needs within optimal floor space allocations. Projects have included briefing the space metrics to support multi-service, agile working environments ; co-creating the space typologies for multi-user Community Campus facilities & modelling the space standards linked to the Council’s ambitious Schools for the Future programme. The team have been a delight to work with, bringing enthusiasm, respectful challenge, creative solutions & wide-ranging practical expertise to the table.
As part of the development of Inverurie Academy, we procured (through hubco Strategic Support Partnering Services [SSPS]) SPACE strategies who are market leading practitioners at the strategic briefing stage within the education sector. SPACE strategies set out clear terms of engagement, objectives and timescales for the process and everyone involved understood what was expected. From start to finish SPACE strategies worked collaboratively with all council officers and the process delivered exactly what we set out to achieve, which was an accommodation budget that was on metric but more importantly delivered forward thinking teaching spaces that align to the needs of Curriculum for Excellence, provided flexibility and placed the learner at the centre of the process.I am absolutely delighted with the outcome and impressed with how SPACE strategies worked with our team. Their approach ensured that everyone’s input, from Teachers, Head Teachers, Heads of Education and Technical officers created a shared output and this has set the project up for success as we have a common vision and an on-metric accommodation budget.
From the outset it was clear that SPACE strategies were experts in their field, quickly gaining the trust of the client with 1:1 interviews as well as giving all the main stakeholders the opportunity to inform the brief through workshops & feedback sessions. This process allowed more efficient utilisation of space and opportunities for ‘new ways of learning’ to be explored. There was a clear brief produced which all stakeholders agreed to and excellent handover from SPACE strategies to the Architect which has ensured the clear messages within the brief has informed the design.
NORR greatly enjoyed working with SPACE strategies in the development of the Brief for our new Learning Campus project in Kilmarnock. This collaborative approach allowed the creation of a clear set of spaces driven by contemporary educational needs, providing us as the architects with a firm yet flexible footing from which to develop an efficient building design full of interesting spaces and volumes. Our collaboration also assisted in bringing greater clarity to the design process, engaging with users and helping us to bring these stakeholders on the design development journey with us.
